About | Roots and Grasses was established in 1980 and produces a wide variety of handmade basketry along with other art and craft items . These unique baskets comprises of laundry baskets, shopping baskets, bread and fruit trays, place mats, lamp shades, hats and much more. A unique collection of Royal Vessels are also created by the mainly self taught, Ghanian trained artist Mrs. Ireka Jelani. A variety of indeginous and other materials are used to make these hand woven items such as khus khus grass, pandanus, rock balsam. cabbage palm and rattan. These products are multipurpose and are perfect utilitarian and decorative fine crafts for homes, hotels, businesses and churches. Basketry
Basketry is an ancient craft. Basketry items are used from the cradle to the grave. Woven products are functional as well as decorative and are used for storage, shelter, home decorations and other purposes. A variety of natural and synthetic materials are utalized to weave baskets these include; straw, wood, wire, plastics, fabric, etc. Techinques such as randing (over one, under one), wailing, braiding, plaiting and coiling are used to make baskets. Traditional and contemporary baskets can be made by employing age old methods and other processes.
When I sit amongst the strands in a humble meditation the Royal Vessels I create is amazing.
